Many self-employed Malaysians assume that SOCSO protection is only for salaried employees. LINDUNG KENDIRI proves otherwise — and if you work for yourself, this scheme may already apply to you.

If you have never heard of LINDUNG KENDIRI, you are not alone. Despite being in force since 2017, the Self-Employment Social Security Scheme — known formally as LINDUNG KENDIRI — remains one of the most underutilised social protection programmes in Malaysia. For freelancers, sole traders, gig workers, and small business owners operating across 20 recognised sectors, understanding this scheme is not just good financial practice. It is a matter of knowing your rights.

What Is LINDUNG KENDIRI?

Introduced under the Self-Employment Social Security Act 2017 and administered by PERKESO, LINDUNG KENDIRI was designed to extend SOCSO's social security framework beyond the traditional employer-employee relationship. It initially applied only to passenger transportation workers — taxi drivers, e-hailing drivers, and bus drivers — from 1 June 2017. By 1 January 2020, the government expanded its coverage to 20 sectors, bringing a far wider group of self-employed individuals under its protection.

The sectors now covered include Construction, Manufacturing, Food & Beverage, Agriculture, Fisheries, Hawkers, Online Business, Information Technology & Data Processing, Professional Services, Beauty & Healthcare, and several others. If your livelihood falls within any of these categories, the scheme is relevant to you.

Who Qualifies?

Eligibility is straightforward. Any Malaysian citizen or permanent resident who earns a living through self-employment qualifies — with no upper age limit. You will need a copy of your identity card along with a supporting document relevant to your sector, such as a driving licence, e-hailing profile, business permit, or a letter of confirmation from an industry association.

What Does It Cover?

LINDUNG KENDIRI provides protection against work-related accidents and occupational diseases. Coverage begins from the exact moment your contribution payment is recognised — making timely payment essential. The scheme offers a comprehensive range of benefits:

  • Medical Benefit covers free treatment at PERKESO panel clinics and government hospitals. For treatment at non-panel clinics, reimbursement is available subject to PERKESO's conditions.

  • Temporary Disablement Benefit pays a daily cash benefit — between RM30.00 and RM105.33 per day — for any period of medical leave of four or more days resulting from a work-related injury, provided a medical certificate is issued.

  • Permanent Disablement Benefit provides a lump sum payment calculated at 90% of your selected insured monthly earning, adjusted proportionally to the assessed degree of permanent disability.

  • Dependants' Benefit ensures that if you pass away due to a work-related incident, your eligible dependants — spouse, children under 21, parents, or siblings — receive ongoing monthly payments equivalent to 90% of your insured earning. Spouses, parents, and grandparents receive this benefit for life; children receive it until age 21, marriage, or completion of a first degree, whichever comes first.

  • Constant-Attendance Allowance of RM500 per month is payable to those who suffer total permanent disablement and require full-time personal care, as certified by a Medical Assessor.

  • Funeral Benefit of up to RM3,000 (effective 1 June 2024) is paid upon death resulting from a work-related injury.

  • Physical and Vocational Rehabilitation services — including physiotherapy, prosthetics, orthopaedic equipment, and vocational retraining — are provided free of charge.

How Much Does It Cost?

Contributions are structured around four tiers of insured monthly earning, making the scheme accessible even at the lowest income levels:

At as little as RM13.10 per month, the scheme offers meaningful financial protection at a cost that is difficult to argue against.

How to Register

Registration and contribution payments can be made through the Prihatin app, available on both Google Play and the App Store, or via the Prihatin Web portal at prihatin.perkeso.gov.my. The process is straightforward and can be completed without visiting a PERKESO office.

A Note for Accounting Professionals

For those advising clients who operate as sole proprietors, freelancers, or micro-business owners, LINDUNG KENDIRI deserves a place in your compliance checklist. Self-employed individuals in the 20 covered sectors have obligations under the Act, and contributions may be considered as part of their personal financial planning. Raising awareness of this scheme — particularly with clients who may be unknowingly unprotected — is part of delivering well-rounded professional advice.
